I believe everyone expected Vi$ta to run these games fine... not forcing everyone to shell out more money for new versions...

More or less yes. As your misconfigured machine can't even run BF2 in XP, I wouldn't start whinging that an OS probably a year away from being released won't run it.

BF2 could run perfectly in my machine before 1.2 patch. I don't know what magically happened to my PC. I don't understand neither.

hehe, problems after patch 1.2 :)
U must have an ATI radeon 8500 - 9250 card. Everyone having ATI radeon from 8500 to 9250 having problems using patch 1.2 Check the battlefield2 website for more information on the new patch EA is building to solve this issue.
Keep in mind, from these cards having the problem the ATI 8500 is the only supported card so the other might not been fixed in the new patch.
I have an ATI 9550 and BF2 still running fine with the patch, my brother has an ATI 8500 and also can't play the game no more.
So this has nothing to do with vista, but everything with the patch from EA. Reinstall the game without latest patch and it should work fine again.

The patch fixing the problem came out today.

No. I used to be able to run BF2 1.0 (the retail version) in my P3 machine. All of a sudden, even 1.0 couldn't run (forget about the patches first).

That's what I did and BF2 1.0 didn't work now.
